New Into the Blue Dive Sites
For the 2005 blockbuster, Into the Blue, a number of huge underwater sets were created near Stuart Cove's. Two DC-3 cargo planes were sunk offshore. One was placed at a shark location for stunts, a second one was placed near a shallow reef for easy filming. The third one was placed in a giant water tank at the Bacardi Rum factory for the close-up work.

When the film wrapped, Stuart convinced the producers to leave the shallow reef wreck for divers to enjoy. Unfortunately, this wreck was damaged during a storm. But—there is actually one more plane left! So, Stuart Cove's arranged to have the remaining parts of the airplane used in the Bacardi Tank placed on the bottom with the parts from the original shallow wreck.

Today, divers can enjoy the remnants of the two combined wrecks at the site now referred to as the DC-3.

In addition to the planes, a replica of a skeletal Spanish galleon was built and sunk in waters near Stuart's operation. Divers coming to Stuart Cove' s can explore these pieces of Hollywood history today. NEWS FROM AROUND THE DIVING WORLD

Bruce Purdy, president of Blackbeard's Charters, is honored for his efforts by Scuba Diving magazine Blackbeard's Cruises is awarded "Best Environmental Initiative by a Dive Operator" by Scuba Diving magazine for its efforts in revitalizing the reefs by relocating sea urchins. Under the guidance of Bruce Purdy, president of Blackbeard's Cruises, members of the Bahamas Diving Association are relocating sea urchins, Diadema antillarum, from rubble to reefs. The sea urchins are voracious consumers of algae, which, when left unchecked, destroys vast tracts of coral reef. Test sites have experienced significant reduction in algae. Since inception, close to 100 divers have collected more than 2,000 sea urchins for relocation. With over a year of observation, there has been significant increases in coral coverage on test reefs while algae coverage is decreasing.

Blackbeard's Charters donates specific weeks aboard the Cat Ppalu, a 65-foot catamaran based in the Exumas, Bahamas, for relocation excursions. Divers aid in the collection, relocation and observations of long spiny sea urchins during the course of the week. The value of the trip is tax-deductible. For more information, please contact Blackbeard's Charters offices at (800) 327-9600 or e-mail diadema@blackbeard-cruises.com.
Hurricane Relief While hurricane seasons are never kind, this has been a particularly brutal one for parts of the U.S., Latin America and the Caribbean. Hurricane Wilma recently made a direct hit on the island of Cozumel before slamming into Cancun and the Yucatan, then swinging around and hitting South Florida. As divers, our travels have taken many of us to these beleaguered shores, and many of us have been enriched by these places' environmental and cultural beauty. It's time to repay the favor. The American Red Cross and Mexican Red Cross are helping the victims of Wilma and need your help. Please go to www.redcross.org to make a donation today.
Cayman Cowboys Diving, action, adventure, intrigue and the environment all come into play in this novel by author Eric Douglas.
